Just as things started to look bright for Tottenham, another crisis has hit at Spurs.
Indeed, Guglielmo Vicario has picked up a rather serious ankle injury, and he’s facing months on the sidelines.
This is a big worry for Tottenham as they’re not well-stocked in the goalkeeping department.
Fraser Forster is great in the Spurs dressing room, but at the age of 36 now, he’s not necessarily cut out for top-level football these days.
So, what can Tottenham do?
According to Alasdair Gold, speaking on his YouTube channel, Tottenham, much to his surprise, can still sign a free agent goalkeeper should they wish to.
Tottenham can sign a new free agent goalkeeper
Gold shared whether or not Spurs are allowed to bring in a free agent.
Much to his surprise, he’s discovered that Tottenham should be allowed to sign a new goalkeeper from the free agents list.
“The other way of doing it is to bring in a free agent. I was surprised by this. I thought it was too late to bring in a free agent, but Guesty was doing digging around today and talking to people around the Premier League and yeah. I think Spurs technically because they only have 23 senior players in their Premier League squad, that means they have two spots, so yes if there was a free agent on the market they could bring them in.”
Which goalkeepers could Tottenham sign?
Tottenham are allowed to sign a goalkeeper as a free agent, so, that begs the question, which ‘keepers are available.
- Keylor Navas
- Jordi Masip
- Wayne Hennessey
- Loris Karius
As you can imagine, the list of unattached goalkeepers isn’t chalked full of talent, but there are a few players in here who could do a better job than Fraser Forster.
Keylor Navas may be older now, but he is a multiple-time Champions League winner with bags of experience.
Meanwhile, Loris Karius has played plenty of top-level games, and some Newcastle staff didn’t want Karius to leave the club this summer.
Jordi Masip has also played tons of games in La Liga, while Wayne Hennessy certainly knows what it takes to be a number two in the Premier League.
Whether or not Spurs opt to go down this route remains to be seen, but this is an option that is open to the north London club and there are a handful of decent goalkeepers available on a free.
This may well be a situation to keep an eye on if Fraser Forster struggles when he comes into the side.
