James Tavernier could be finally be set for his Ibrox departure after Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq added to their Rangers contingent.
Michael Beale has returned under the wing of another former Gers boss in Steven Gerrard as the new assistant coach at Al-Ettifaq, as confirmed on their official X account [20 November].
Tavernier was widely reported to be on the chopping block in Glasgow throughout the summer as Philippe Clement embarked on an extensive overhaul of his squad.
However, while interest appeared from Saudi Arabia in the 33-year-old [HITC], the captain opted to remain in the Scottish Premiership, but a reunion with two old faces in the Middle East could finally spell an end to his nine-year stint at Rangers.
Rangers are ready to move on from James Tavernier
The phase-out process at Rangers has already begun, and it seems only a matter of time before Tavernier packs his bags at Ibrox.
It is believed that Dujon Sterling has replaced Tavernier as the first-choice right-back for the Gers, and rightfully so; the captain has failed to live up to his duties this season, and now is the perfect time for club and player to part ways.
A move to Saudi Arabia would be the best outcome for all parties.
Rangers can remove his hefty payslip from the wage bill, and Tavernier can earn one last final payday, playing out the remainder of his career under a familiar manager.
Clement now has Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo, who can fill the void at right-back. With the Belgian also facing an increasingly uncertain future at Ibrox, drastic changes are necessary if he is to remain at the helm.
Therefore, it is time for the Glasgow outfit to become ruthless. While Tavernier’s inevitable exit will be bittersweet, it is detrimental to help the Light Blues move in the right direction.
Rangers can still salvage what remains of a catastrophic campaign in Scotland with qualification to the knockout rounds of the Europa League still all to play for. Sentiment is no longer an option – unfortunately for Tavernier, his time is up.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are in an astonishing repeat cycle after a ‘crazy’ Nils Koppen development.
