Cyriel Dessers only got 10 minutes of game time for Rangers in their Europa League clash against Tottenham on Thursday.
The game ended in a draw between the two sides at Ibrox on 12 December, with the Gers the better side in the clash.
Dessers came close to giving his side the lead in the final minutes with a golden chance to score but the striker hit it straight at Fraser Forster, who kept the shot out.
Although it was a good save, Ally McCoist admitted on TNT Sports [12 December, 21:45] that the Rangers man also should have done better, which sums up a bit of theme with the player this season.
Speaking on the Open Goal podcast [10 December], Andy Halliday claimed that supporters at Ibrox were running out of patience with the 30-year-old as he said: “I think fans kind of, let’s be honest, they’re kind of fed up watching Dessers over the last few weeks or whatnot.”
Cyriel Dessers isn’t showing up for Rangers
Dessers’ short cameo on the field against Rangers proved Halliday right as his performance was lacklustre and wasteful.
While the 30-year-old failed to make an impact from the pitch, 20-year-old Hamza Igamane continued to impress supporters as he got another goal on the board, putting his side ahead in the 47th minute.
Not only does this create a separation between the two players but it does reinforce the idea that it will be a new generation of players who will turn the Gers’ fortunes around at Ibrox this season.
It’s not about the failure of the striker to score in the game but more about the fact he wasted a big chance that could have won his side the game, which surely reinforces the idea that supporters will continue to be frustrated with his performances.
The 30-year-old is not out of contract until 2027 so it will be interesting to see what his long-term future looks like.
However, if Philippe Clement is going to save his job at Ibrox, he will surely know after Thursday that Dessers won’t be the one to help to turn things around.
In other Rangers news, Gary Neville and Ian Wright have namedropped the club in recent discussions after what happened.
