Ibrox View: Time is now for Rangers to pounce for perfect striker upgrade transfer

Rangers are in clear need of an upgrade on Cyriel Dessers, and can waste no further time in their pursuit of Rapid Bucharest striker Albion Rrahmani.

On 2 August, Romanian outlet ProSport reported that the Gers are ready to “put the money on the table” for the Kosovan, despite Rapid shareholder Victor Angelescu saying he would 95 per cent not be sold.

Rrahmani’s asking price has reportedly been reduced from £6.9million to around £5.2m – provided Rapid retain 20 per cent of his rights and that’s the perfect signal for the Light Blues to seal a transfer.

ProSport’s report came just a day before Dessers fired blanks in a drab 0-0 draw at Hearts, but Philippe Clement won’t be able to bring Rrahmani to Ibrox without first selling his incumbent number nine [Chris Jack, 5 August].

What was billed as a mass squad overhaul hasn’t quite come to pass at Ibrox this summer, with Clement himself openly admitting that his present crop of players is not as strong as it had been last season.

It’s still nine in, and nine out so far in the window, but more transfers on both fronts simply must follow if the Belgian is to truly get the new-look team he wants to produce this season.

Dessers, signed last summer for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £4m, is, despite being Clement’s first-choice pick to lead the line at present, one of the players who could head for the exit [Daily Record, 24 July].

And for the Gers to truly get an upgrade in the centre-forward position, that arguably has to happen, with neither Rrahmani nor Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland likely to come cheap [Daily Record, 30 July].

Dessers has attracted interest from various leagues across Europe, but his starting place still looks secure with Danilo and Hamza Igamane not yet ready for first-team action (for different reasons).

Clement has to make a judgement call on a crucial position in his team with just 25 days of the transfer window left – and that call should be to sell Dessers for as much as he possibly can and bring in a much-needed upgrade, in the form of Rrahmani.
