Rangers being “open” to selling James Tavernier should be a sign to the 33-year-old that his time at Ibrox is up.
GiveMeSport reported on 7 September that with interest in Tavernier from Qatar and Turkey, figures in the Gers hierarchy are prepared to let him leave before the respective leagues’ transfer windows close.
That amounts to a “genuine chance” that the long-serving Light Blues right-back does end up leaving Ibrox before 13 September, with the club set to scour the free-agent market for a potential replacement [HITC, 7 September].
Tavernier has stayed put despite being linked with an exit from Glasgow throughout the summer transfer window, but with the Gers willing to sanction a deal, the time may be right for him to finally move on.
James Tavernier transfer the right thing for all parties at Rangers
Tavernier has undoubtedly shaped the modern era at Ibrox, arguably more than any other player – having led the Gers to their first silverware and Premiership title since their return to the top flight.
However, the 33-year-old has become a lightning rod for fans’ frustrations following a few disappointing seasons at Ibrox, with a mixed start to the new campaign rearing its head in a 3-0 loss at Celtic Park.
The right-back was roundly slammed by fans, pundits and journalists alike for his below-par performance in the Gers’ woeful Old Firm loss, taking the brunt of criticism on behalf of his team-mates.
As a result, talk of an exit from the club he’s called home for almost a decade is on the rise once again, and if the club can bring in a nominal fee for the veteran, they’d be hard-pressed to turn it down.
Losing a regular source of goals and assists – albeit he’s managed zero so far this season – outside a transfer window wouldn’t be ideal, but with free agents to pursue and the likes of Dujon Sterling ready to step into the breach, Tavernier’s time could be up.
At this stage, it must be said that appears to be the best outcome for everyone involved.
