“I’m saddened” – One-cap Super Eagles star laments Finidi George’s exit as Nigeria coach

Remo Stars FC defender Sodiq Ismail has voiced his disappointment at Finidi George’s resignation as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Soccernet.ng reports.

Ismail is the first player from Remo Stars to be called up to Nigeria’s national team. He received his debut call-up in May when Coach Finidi named his squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June.

Although Ismail didn’t play in the 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo, he made his debut in the following match against Benin Republic. He came on as a second-half substitute, but Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat, their first-ever loss to the Cheetahs.

Coach Finidi resigned soon after, following the Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to appoint a foreign Technical Adviser as his boss. Ismail has shared his regrets about Finidi’s departure, saying he was saddened by the resignation but hoped to learn from the new manager.

“I’m saddened by the coach’s resignation,” Ismail told Sportsboom via The Punch while appreciating the man who gave him his international breakthrough.

“However, I hope to learn from the new manager and his team when they come on board.”

Finidi left his role in June after just two games in charge. The team’s poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers led the Nigeria Football Federation to seek a foreign technical adviser.

Finidi has since been appointed the new head coach of Rivers United.

Ismail, nicknamed “Nigeria’s Dani Alves” for his attacking forays even as a right-back, praised Finidi’s clear instructions during his debut match.

The youngster recalled, “The coach’s instructions for me in the game were simple and clear. He told me, ‘Ismail, when you have the ball, just deliver it inside the box.'”

Ismail also noted similarities between Finidi’s coaching style and that of his club coach at Remo Stars, Daniel Ogunmodede, suggesting a smooth transition under the former coach’s guidance.

Despite his disappointment, Ismail remains optimistic about his future with the Super Eagles.

“It was an honour to represent my country, and I believe it will significantly benefit my career,” he stated.

Ismail’s national team call-up followed an impressive 2023/24 season in the Nigeria Premier Football League, where he recorded 13 assists and one goal, making him one of the standout players, particularly noted for his attacking contributions from the defensive line.

Over the past one-and-a-half seasons, Ismail has been a consistent starter for Remo Stars.

The young defender’s efficiency on the right side of defence makes him a perfect fit to serve as an understudy for Nottingham Forest star Ola Aina.
