David Edgar believes Rangers are “in bother” due to their lack of decent squad depth following their defeat to Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final.
The Gers made plenty of substitutions throughout the game, including the introduction of Kieran Dowell in the second half of extra-time at Hampden Park.
Rangers fans were given their money’s worth in terms of entertainment on 15 December, but it was ultimately a day to forget as Celtic came out of the game triumphant.
Writing via the Heart and Hand Podcast X account (16 December), Edgar shared some of the negatives he took away from the game, with the introduction of Dowell one of those.
“Negatives: Squad depth. If you’re bringing on the likes of Dowell, you’re in bother,” he wrote.
“We need a centre-half to play beside Souttar. Decision-making in the last 3rd needs to improve. Have to be better at retaining possession.”
Philippe Clement has to work some magic for Rangers in January
The 2024/25 season has been full of ups and downs for Rangers this season.
The Gers’ form in the Europa League and even the Scottish League Cup has been more than impressive, but their performances in the Scottish Premiership have let them down on more than one occasion already.
While there may not be an awful lot of money left in the Gers’ war chest, it still feels like plenty of improvements could be made to the squad, with centre-back being an area of particular importance.
As John Souttar is now out for a few weeks due to injury, both Robin Propper and Leon Balogun will have to muster up the courage to play almost every game until the Scotsman returns.
Of course, there are other areas that could do with additional players being added, too, but if Clement wants to make a late charge for the title, the best way to do that would likely be to add another natural centre-back to his ranks as soon as possible.
Wherever you look, this current squad is in need of strengthening pretty much all over.
In other Rangers news, Billy Dodds was left fuming after what a Gers midfielder did against Celtic on Sunday.
