Insider: Significant update on Spurs-Gomes deal tonight

Tottenham are unlikely to make a move to sign Angel Gomes despite his contract situation, according to the club’s former scout.

Mick Brown, who also spent time at Gomes’ former club Man United and remains well-connected within the game, exclusively told Football Insider that a number of clubs are considering making an offer, but he would be surprised to see Spurs among them.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson previously told Football Insider that Ange Postecoglou is a big fan of the England midfielder and had considered a move for his signature.

However, Brown has explained that James Maddison’s presence in the side and the role he plays under Postecoglou would make that deal unlikely.

It is said that the 27-year-old Tottenham star shares too many similar qualities with the Lille man.

Gomes, 23, has less than a year remaining on his current deal with the Ligue 1 side and will be free to discuss a move back to the Premier League from January onwards.

This, as well as his recent performances for England, has put transfer teams across the Premier League on red alert as they continue to keep close tabs on his progress.

Gomes started England’s 3-1 victory against Finland in Helsinki last time out and picked up an assist for Jack Grealish’s opening goal – further inspiring questions about his future.

Brown, who remains well-connected at Tottenham and across the game as a whole, insisted that the midfielder is attracting plenty of interest, but Spurs are likely to consider other options.

“I don’t think Tottenham are among those interested,” he told Football Insider.

“They’ve already got James Maddison who can play a similar role.

“I would see those two as being not too dissimilar.

“I know Gomes plays a bit deeper but we’ve seen Maddison drop into that space in recent games.

“They’re both players who want to see a lot of the ball and look to make things happen, they’re clever passers and good in possession.

“I’d be surprised if Tottenham made a move for Gomes because of that.

“Angel’s skill has never been in question, the only concerns are about whether he’d be physically good enough to keep up in the Premier League.

“I’ve heard there are clubs looking at him and his contract situation, not just Tottenham.”
