Chelsea’s transfer business in recent years hasn’t exactly been the best.
The Blues have made a number of big-money signings that haven’t paid off, and Todd Boehly has been largely criticised for how he’s run the Stamford Bridge club.
However, the ship seems to be steadying in west London under Enzo Maresca, and while Maresca does deserve praise for Chelsea’s turnaround, the man truly at the heart of this form has been Cole Palmer.
Palmer has been electric for Chelsea this season.
Palmer has been compared to Dennis Bergkamp as of late, but now, he’s been compared to a Tottenham legend as Dimitar Berbatov says that the signing of Palmer at Chelsea reminds him of Gareth Bale’s arrival at Tottenham.

Cole Palmer reminds Dimitar Berbatov of Gareth Bale
Berbatov compared the signing of Palmer to the arrival of Bale at Spurs.
The pundit says that Palmer’s arrival was similar to Bale’s in that he was a relative unknown beforehand before becoming a superstar.
“It was £40m on a kid who was unproven, nobody knew anything about him, that is something big,” The host said.
“It was the same with Gareth Bale at Tottenham, he was 17 or 16, nobody knew about him, he was trying to prove himself and then he became one of the best ever. With Palmer, now we can rave about him, but the challenge now is to stay and be consistent, it’s up to him.” Berbatov said.
Palmer stats compared to Bale
It’s obviously early days for Palmer in terms of his career, but he’s already put up a Premier League season that can compare with Bale’s best for Spurs.
Cole Palmer 2023/24 Gareth Bale 2012/13 Games 33 33 Goals 22 21 Assists 11 4
Of course, Bale would ultimately go on to become a five-time Champions League winner and a global superstar at Real Madrid, but the fact that Palmer is putting up these types of numbers at such a young age is incredible.
As Berbatov says, Bale went on to become one of the best ever after his move to Tottenham, and there’s seemingly no reason why Palmer can’t follow the same sort of trajectory.
Palmer is a top-class player who could genuinely be considered one of the best in the world if he continues to improve at this remarkable rate.
Chelsea struck gold with this signing, that’s for sure.
