'It's A Disgrace' - Keith Wyness rips into Man United as £50m news confirmed

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Man United’s £50million investment at Carrington will only be enough to “catch up” to where they should be.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the facilities at Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton are “way above” the Red Devils’ offering.

Man United announced last week (14 June) that they will spend £50million on refurbishing their Carrington training ground – promising a “world-class football facility with a positive culture to support future success”.

Foster + Partners have been appointed to lead the project, which starts this week and will run for the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign.

The refurbishment will be funded by part of the $300million Sir Jim Ratcliffe committed for infrastructure as part of his deal to purchase a minority stake at Old Trafford.

Carrington is a ‘disgrace’ as Man United start refurbishment work, says Wyness

Wyness claimed the facilities at Carrington are currently a “disgrace” – but suggested the new investment could be a “breath of fresh air”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Well, I don’t know if it’s thinking long-term – it’s catching up to where they should be.

“Carrington is a bit of a disgrace, that’s not been a secret in football.

“The new training ground at Spurs, Villa and even Everton are way above Man United’s in terms of quality and design.

“The players really demand a much better facility. There have to be additions, and these things are now necessary in football.

“I don’t think £50million is anything more than just catching up to where they should be.

“There was always talk of a new training ground. I think that may have been a step too far, Carrington is a good location.

“Let’s see. If they do it right, it’ll be a breath of fresh air.

“There have been a lot of excuses about the training ground that players and managers have bought into.

“That takes away a potential complaint.”
