Tottenham midfielder James Maddison is a player that seems to still be “trying to prove himself” to his manager, according to Glenn Hoddle.
Spurs travelled to Glasgow ahead of their Europa League fixture against Rangers. Maddison came under the spotlight as he struggled to make an impact in the first half.
The 28-year-old had yet to score in Europe this season but had a respectable nine goals and assists for the North London team.
Due to a few inconsistent performances, TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher and former player Glenn Hoddle shared their thoughts on the England international.
Fletcher said on the broadcasters match commentary (8.16 pm): “It’s a big night tonight Glenn, in terms of [him] not playing a great deal of Premier League football.
“He can’t quite crack that starting lineup for Ange Postecoglou on a consistent basis”.
Hoddle responded: “He’s just starting to get on the ball now, Maddison, but you always feel as if he’s still trying to prove himself to Ange”.
Tottenham need star players to be more consistent in this crucial run of form
The former Leicester player signed for around £40 million [Sky Sports] last summer. He brought excitement to Spurs’ midfield as he offers a creativity and technical ability unmatched by others in the squad.
However, persistent injury issues in North London have disrupted any momentum, preventing him from finding consistent form.
Maddison has shown flashes of brilliance, whether through a free kick, an incisive pass, or his brace against Man City away—a feat few players can boast.
With Tottenham now backing Postecoglou in the January transfer window, Maddison has a chance to prove his importance to the side and solidify his role.
According to Football Insider, Spurs aim to sign a defensive midfielder and winger, moves that could bolster the team and enhance the attacking midfielder’s performance.
In other news, Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign a 17-year-old talent.
