Rangers don’t stand a chance of appointing David Weir as their new director of football, James McFadden has said.
Nils Koppen was recently made Technical Director at the Light Blues following his arrival as director of football recruitment earlier this year [BBC, 19 November].
Weir is Brighton’s technical director at the moment, and McFadden can’t see the former Gers defender leaving the Seagulls.
“I know he’s at Brighton, he’s at a big club. But he obviously loves Rangers,” Si Ferry said on the Open Goal podcast. “See that director of football, is that not perfect for David Weir?”
McFadden responded: “No chance. It’s perfect for them… No.”
Rangers are in terrible state
Rangers are in disarray at the moment, both on and off the pitch, with the Glaswegian giants without a CEO and permanent chairman for months.
Brighton have been one of the most successful teams in the Premier League off the pitch in recent years, especially with their astute business in the transfer market.
It would be a surprise to see Weir jump ships and join a seemingly sinking one at Ibrox, with the Bears posting a loss of £17.2 million in their recent accounts.
While the recent recruitment at Rangers has been hit and miss, it’s unrealistic to see someone like Weir joining the Scottish Premiership outfit anytime soon.
What the Light Blues can’t afford to do right now is let the gap between them and Celtic widen, with the Hoops already nine points ahead of the Bears in the league table.
Koppen has admitted he wants former Rangers players back at Ibrox, but it looks as though he can forget this one before it becomes more than a suggestion.
