Joan Laporta delivers promising update on Barcelona’s financial situation

One of the key stories in recent weeks has been Barcelona’s pursuit of big-money signings. Nico Williams is being prioritised, while there are also moves being made to bring back Dani Olmo. These have caught many by surprise, given that state of the Catalans’ finances over the last few years.

Joan Laporta addressed the matter of the club’s financial situation during the first press conference of Hansi Flick, who was presented to the media on Thursday. The Barcelona president re-affirmed his confidence that things are starting to return to normal in the offices of Can Barca.

“The economic issue is much better than it was. The process has been to save the club and then recover it, and we are on the road to normality. Today we can face signings of the magnitude you are talking about because we have done the job. Thanks to the understanding and patience of the partners, we have been able to work and we can say that we are in a situation to face any operation we think we should do.

“In this regard, Deco is working with his team so that, if necessary, he can improve the squad and in this sense, we will shortly announce the economic news that we believe is relevant for this situation that we have reached with work and effort.

“We have a series of investors that have been regularised and the investments will be fulfilled and the valuation of this company will be maintained and follow the criteria of La Liga to be with the one-to-one relationship. With Nike, we are in negotiations that improve Barcelona’s position. We are satisfied with how these negotiations are going. I think we will have news in the medium term. What we will not do is carry out operations that destabilise the sporting structure we have. We will be very strict.”

Flick was asked about the ongoing speculation surrounding Williams, and to no one’s surprise, he remained tight-lipped.

“What I’ve learned in this job is that Nico is not a Barcelona player and I have nothing to say about this. He’s playing for another club and I’m concentrating on my team. I can’t add anything else.”

The fact is Barcelona cannot register Williams (or Olmo) until they return to La Liga’s 1:1 rule. There is confidence that this will happen in the very near future, but until then, no arrivals can become official. Still, it does appear that things are getting better.
