Jonny Evans shares the lie he told Alex Ferguson just after he signed for Manchester United

Alex Ferguson is one of the most respected figures in football history.

The former Manchester United manager was a true Premier League great, and the Red Devils are still struggling to replicate his success in the post-Fergie era.

Jonny Evans is the last man standing from the Ferguson era at Old Trafford, and speaking to Stadium Astro, he’s recalled one of his first encounters with the United legend.

Evans was asked to recall some of his early conversations with Ferguson after Phil Jones did similar in a recent interview.

Evans shared a rather funny story as Fergie asked him about his pace as a young player, and he had to resort to lying to his manager about his speed.

Jonny Evans lied to Alex Ferguson about his pace

Evans shared details of a conversation he had with Alex Ferguson just after joining Manchester United.

The Northern Irishman says that Ferguson asked him about his pace, and Evans had to lie and say that he was much quicker than he actually was.

“I want to go back to Alex Ferguson. Recently Phil Jones shared a thing where he was about to sign for Man United and Sir Alex looked at him and said ‘are you a winner son?’ Can you share something similar to that?” Evans was asked.

“I remember one time he asked me, ‘are you fast?’ I think I’d already signed for the club, and he said ‘did you win the 100m races at school?’ And I obviously lied and said that I did,” Evans said.

What’s been said about Jonny Evans’ pace

Jonny Evans has never been the quickest player in the world, and at the age of 36, he certainly isn’t blessed with pace.

Indeed, last season, Chris Sutton claimed that Evans can’t run, and at his age, you can hardly blame him for not being fleet-footed.

However, Evans’ pace may be tested this weekend. According to The Mirror, the defender is set for a rare outing at left-back for United after a string of injuries in that position.

Evans has been in good form as of late, Graham Potter was very impressed by his performance against Aston Villa last time out, and the veteran has shown that you don’t necessarily need speed to perform at the top level.

Evans may have lied to Ferguson about his pace, but that didn’t stop him from winning three Premier League titles under the manager during his first spell at Old Trafford.
