Keith Jackson believes Rangers will be readying themselves to face a “hard sale” if they choose to sign Lawrence Shankland in the transfer window.
The Gers were consistently linked with the Scottish talisman throughout the summer but a move never came to fruition.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (1 December), journalist Jackson shared previous talks held between the parties but said a move does now look unlikely.
“I think all the talk of are Rangers going to go for Lawrence Shankland and Rangers were having serious discussions behind the scenes before they decided not to do it,” he said.
“I think there was an awareness with Lawrence Shankland and his camp that there might be something there and I think Hearts fans are very unfairly looking at it and asking ‘does this guy even want to be here anymore’?
“There’s absolutely no certainty that that deal will happen now because Rangers have already got strikers that don’t score goals and if they went for Lawrence Shankland at a time where he’s suffering a real drought, then that might prove to be a hard sale to their supporters.”
Rangers cannot make the mistake of signing Lawrence Shankland
While a move for Shankland may have been the only thing that Rangers fans wanted in the summer, when looking at his form this season, it feels like they’ve dodged a bullet.
The striker has scored just one goal across all competitions this season and has probably been at a worse level than what Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers have found themselves at this term.
Shankland’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season so if the Gers did want him, they’d likely be able to get him for a cut-rate price.
But at his moment in time, it doesn’t feel like spending money on the 29-year-old is worth the risk.
The Gers already have three strikers who are performing below the levels expected of them so it’s not really much of a surprise to see Jackson say that his move would be a “hard sale”.
There are plenty of other players Clement could spend his money on that would likely do a far better job than the Scotsman could at the moment.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton reacted to a question that Kris Boyd asked him at half-time of the Gers’ clash against St Johnstone on Sunday.
