Everton fans are set to protest the ticket prices and Gav Buckland has backed supporters amid fears they are being priced out of football.
The Toffees faithful, along with those from Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City, will hold a demonstration ahead of their respective fixtures on 1 December to raise their voice against increasing costs [BBC, 28 November].
Speaking on the Royal Blue podcast [29 November], Buckland slammed the potential prices of season tickets and has hit out at the double standards in football.
“A £1000 towards your season ticket. That was one of the prices. That’s just nonsense, isn’t it really?” he said.
“It’s the hypocrisy of football that you want to be inclusive; the easy bits, you can project you are, but economically, you’re not. You’re pricing people out.”
The Friedkin Group can’t price out Everton fans
With The Friedkin Group set to take over the Toffees from Farhad Moshiri, hopefully by mid-December, [Alan Myers, 20 November] and the Merseyside club set to move to their new stadium, things could become complicated for fans.
The Blues are set to reveal their pricing for the new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock in December [Liverpool Echo, 29 October], and it remains to be seen how the Americans will price the tickets.
What needs to happen is a realisation from the powers that be that ordinary folk are still coping with a cost of living crisis and soaring prices, it simply has to come into their thinking.
Supporters are the lifeblood of any club, and it’s sad to see that they’re being neglected, despite the Premier League’s record commercial and broadcast deal — rising by 17 per cent to £12.25 billion for 2025 to 2028 [The Athletic, 28 December].
It’s not surprising to see the Goodison faithful turn out to make their feelings known, and the incoming hierarchy at the club would do well to take note of what is happening.
The Toffees aren’t in any position to increase costs on those who attend the fixtures regularly, considering the drab displays the Goodison faithful have endured over the years under Sean Dyche.
The move to the new stadium will see the Toffees increase their seating capacity, which will evidently lead to more matchday revenue so matchday tickets should, and must, be priced fairly.
