Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle United are likely to double their revenue if they move to a new stadium.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted the move could come at a cost to fans should the Magpies move too far outside the city centre.
St James’ Park currently holds 52,000 but the club’s ambitious Saudi Arabian ownership are ready to fund improvements.
Newcastle, who recorded £250.3million in revenue for the 2022-23 campaign, have conducted a stadium feasibility study and it has been widely reported that a decision will be made in the coming months.
A redevelopment at St James’ is under consideration, while moving to a new location has not yet been ruled out.
Newcastle stadium move could come at a cost, says Wyness
Wyness, who has previously said Newcastle won’t move into a potential new build until 2030, told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The main site being considered is close to St James’ in a green space, but that would have real issues with planning.
“I’m sure they’ve got a multi-use prototype worked up, and there’s no doubt it could double the revenue at Newcastle.
“But there’ll also be more costs to come with that.
“The racecourse is another area under consideration, but that wouldn’t be popular as the beauty of St James’ is that it’s right in the centre – people love it.
“They probably could double the revenue with a new stadium, but it’ll come with a big cost.
“We’ll hear more about this early in the new year.
“I think PIF are very sensitive to the issues, they’ll understand the heritage.
“The economic factors will be a consideration, but so is history. When you have a jewel like Newcastle, you’ve got to pay attention to that – I’m sure they will.”
