Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has hailed Tottenham for doubling the number of non-football events held at their money-spinning stadium per year.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the move is a “big step forward” for the Lilywhites financially.
As per the BBC (3 August), plans to double the number of “major non-football events” at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been approved by Haringey Council.
Beyonce and Lady Gaga are among the high-profile acts to perform at the state-of-the-art London stadium since it opened.
Spurs were previously permitted to hold 16 non-football (concerts, boxing, NFL, etc) events per year but can now host 30 such events.
Commercial revenues at Tottenham rose from £183.5million in 2022 to £227.7million in 2023.
Wyness hailed the “very positive move” from Spurs which could see those figures skyrocket further.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s great for Spurs.
“There are a lot of wrinkles within those 30 events – you can’t have more than four consecutive days of events, only certain events can be hosted.
“There is a lot of detail that will have to be looked at, but that could still be 30 big nights of revenue for Tottenham.
“A stadium starts to become very cost-effective when you’ve got the means to produce that non-football revenue.
“It was always the plan for Daniel Levy.
“There’s no doubt in London there is a need and appetite for big events.
“It’s a big step forward for Spurs and it’s a part of their ambition. They’ve been proven to be very astute commercially.
“It’s a very positive move and it will become a big hub.
“If only they can improve the transportation links. It’s been a nightmare, so if there was any way to do that – it would make it even more important.”
