Keown: Rangers on course for 'Internal warfare' as 'depressing' Ibrox news unfolds

Gary Keown believes what’s going on at Rangers at the moment compared to Celtic is “depressing” and “internal warfare” is just around the corner at Ibrox.

John Bennett’s sudden resignation from the Gers threw a major spanner in the works of what was happening in Govan.

Celtic had a stellar transfer window with players such as Arne Engels arriving and while Rangers had the likes of Nedim Bajrami coming in, the gulf in quality is staggering.

Writing for the Daily Mail (21 September), Keown shared his thoughts on Rangers and Celtic, comparing whether the Gers have a genuine idea of where they want to take things next.

“Where Celtic fans are swooning over Engels, Ibrox punters are burying their heads under the covers as former chairman Dave King starts chuntering on again from stage left,” he wrote.

“Honestly, has anyone got the stomach for months and months of this? It is depressing. Just a sign of a club going nowhere. Other than backwards, that is. To tired old faces and guys who have been round the block before.

“King had his shot in charge of the train set. He got some things right. He got loads of things wrong. Then, he left. Internal warfare and EGMs to get him back in the door are the last thing the place needs.

“John Gilligan is back as interim chair in the wake of John Bennett stepping down. No offence to Gilligan. He has an impressive business background, but he’s been a director before.

Rangers need to find a clear sense of direction

As aforementioned, if things weren’t already bad at Rangers, the fact that Bennett resigned made matters much worse.

The club seems to have been stuck in a downward spiral since the exit of Steven Gerrard and it’s felt as if they haven’t had a clear direction.

Even their start to the 2024/25 season has been way off the mark with the club finding themselves third in the league.

This may not seem like a failure to most but with the standards that the Gers expect of themselves, this season has been far from their best which is why Philippe Clement has had pressure mounting around his future [Chris Jack, 16 September].

There’s still time for things to change of course and now the club have found themselves back to winning ways, things could be starting to look up.

But, until there’s a new permanent chairman who knows where he wants to take the club, it feels too far off to be thinking of things such as Champions League football, for now at least.

In other Rangers news, Nedim Bajrami has been lauded after what he did v Dundee.
