Lilywhite Rose: Tottenham to make long-term decision on 21y/o after official loan announcement

John Wenham claims Matthew Craig’s season-long loan with Barnsley will determine his long-term future with Tottenham.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the club will either sell the 21-year-old or extend his contract next summer.

As confirmed via the club’s official website (22 July), Craig has joined EFL League One side Barnsley on a season-long loan from Tottenham.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested this season is make or break for the midfielder.

“He is contracted with the club until 2026,” Wenham said.

“Therefore, I think this loan will determine where his future lies. I thought he might get a loan in the EFL Championship this year, and he would have no doubt been able to handle that.

“I think Tottenham will see how this loan goes and then decide to either sell him or extend his contract because he is now a little bit older than some of those other Under-21 players.

“He works hard, and he will never let you down, and I know Doncaster supporters loved him when he was at the club last season.”

Craig enjoyed a positive spell on loan with Doncaster Rovers in EFL League Two last season.

He arrived in January with the club struggling in the bottom half of the table. Craig became a consistent feature in the side and helped propel Rovers to the play-offs.

He will now be keen to make an impact in League One as he looks to impress Ange Postecoglou.

While Spurs will want a bit more than a midfielder who can thrive in the lower leagues of English football, Craig will at least hope to do enough to earn a chance to impress during pre-season next year.

With his 22nd birthday to come this season, and having previously struggled to make an impact in North London on the first-team, it does feel as though it is now or never for the Spurs man.
