Liverpool fans hammer Fabio Carvalho for what he did during Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

Liverpool were not involved in the Premier League action on Sunday – but there was still a game to be invested in as Chelsea took on Brentford.

A win for the Blues would have moved them to within just two points of the Reds at the summit of the Premier League table heading into Sunday’s clash, which is exactly what Enzo Maresca got thanks to goals from Marc Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson.

Having said that, Liverpool do have a game in hand after the Merseyside derby was postponed by Storm Darragh.

However, it was not a straightforward victory for Chelsea as Brentford knocked on the door at Stamford Bridge, pulling a goal back through Bryan Mbeumo in the 90th minute.

In truth, the Bees should have scored long before that, with Liverpool fans lambasting Fabio Carvalho for his involvement in what could prove to be a pivotal result in the title race.

Liverpool fans blame Fabio Carvalho for Chelsea win

After replacing Yehor Yarmolyuk in the 75th minute, the Brentford No.14 endured a nightmare cameo.

Carvalho – who Liverpool sold to Brentford for £27.5m back in August – had a golden chance to equalise for the Bees, but saw his effort from around six yards out slam against the crossbar instead of the back of the net.

The 22-year-old was then made to look like a schoolboy by Moises Caicedo, who shoved him off the ball with ease before Jackson doubled Chelsea’s lead seconds later.

One Liverpool fan wrote on X (previously known as Twitter) to say the Reds are cursed after seeing how Carvalho performed, writing: “Fabio Carvalho misses a sitter from six yards and gives the ball away for Chelsea’s second goal. The curse is too strong.”

A second Liverpool fan was left upset by the Portugal U21 international failing to inspire Brentford to a comeback, writing: “Fabio Carvalho still not helping Liverpool.”

A third Liverpool supporter was also left downbeat, posting: “Fabio Carvalho smh (shake my head). Just so disappointing.”

Last but not least, these three Liverpool fans were particularly upset by how easily Carvalho, who Fulham wanted to sign before Brentford, was moved aside by Caicedo before Jackson scored, writing: “Now he gave the ball away, wow.”

“And just cost them a goal. That’s why we sold him.”

The last fan simply put: “Why, why, why.”

Liverpool pulled off some excellent business with Fabio Carvalho

The Reds paid just £5m to sign Carvalho, who Liverpool had high hopes for, from Fulham back in May 2022.

It was a real bargain for one of the brightest talents in England at the time, but it didn’t exactly work out for the man from Torres Vedras as he made just 21 appearances for Liverpool in two years, spending time on loan at RB Leipzig and Hull City.

However, Liverpool still ended up making over five times that initial £5m investment, while also agreeing a 20% sell-on clause in case he secures another lucrative move in future.
