Chris Sutton could not believe Ian Ladyhead’s suggestion that a Rangers victory against Celtic would have been “handy” for Scottish football.
Hampden Park witnessed a classic on Sunday 15 December as the Old Firm derby needed extra time and penalties to decide which of the rivals lifted the Scottish League Cup.
Nedim Bajrami opened the scoring just before half-time, with the game then exploding into life as Greg Taylor, Daizen Maeda, Mohamed Diomande, Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn and Danilo all hit the back of the net.
Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast [16 December], Ladyhead said: “I personally think it would have been handy for the Scottish game had Rangers won that final.”
Sutton instantly replied: “Oh, what a load of rubbish! What an absolute load of guff! Why?”
Ladyhead said: “If you want a one-team league then… You know that would have given Clement a bit of breathing space, Rangers a bit of confidence, and even a bit of belief moving forward.”
Rangers face brutal Scottish League Cup defeat v Celtic
The Light Blues gave a great account of themselves in what was a thrilling 3-3 draw between the Old Firm rivals, which had to be separated by spot-kicks at Hampden Park.
While Philippe Clement has been under pressure at Ibrox, and rightly so, the Belgian may just have bought himself some more time as Patrick Stewart settles into his new role at the club.
Many fans are still unhappy with Clement being in charge but it remains to be seen who would actually replace him if the club decided to get rid and start again.
If the Gers can put on similar performances on a regular occurrence, they should have no trouble closing the gap on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table and make their way through European competition.
The Europa League is likely to be where the side get most of their success this season, having risen to eighth in the table after six matches. They have been brilliant in the competition.
In other Rangers news, David Edgar has shared his prediction ahead of the January transfer window at Ibrox.
