'Lovely' - Michael Stewart delighted by what he saw Rangers ace do in win v St Johnstone

Ross McCausland delighted Michael Stewart with his “lovely” finish for Rangers against St Johnstone at Hampden Park.

The Premier Sports pundit reacted live on the match coverage on 17 August as the Gers youngster clipped a composed finish into the net in the 93rd minute, to secure the 2-0 win with his first goal of the season, after a controversial opener from Cyriel Dessers.

It secured just a second victory of the campaign from five games with Philippe Clement overseeing an understrength squad that appears to have disharmony behind the scenes.

Stewart said: “You can see here it’s Drey Wright that’s playing them all onside. Lovely finish from Ross McCausland.

“Up one end when it potentially could have been going 1-1, game’s over. That’s a lovely finish from McCausland, just dinks it over Josh Rae.

“You can see the keeper’s desperately hoping that he’s going to be offside but he’s not.”

Cyriel Dessers scores again as Rangers start League Cup defence

It was a very nice finish from the Northern Irishman after another unconvincing Light Blues performance to kick off this season.

In the circumstances it is easy to forget that Clement’s side are the League Cup holders, with the Belgian securing the trophy soon after his arrival last term.

That feels like a long time ago now when he is trying to cobble together results with a squad that has been weakened this summer and is now forced to play home games away from Ibrox.

Ross McCausland made the game safe for Rangers with his first goal of the season.

McCausland likely wouldn’t be getting a huge amount of a look in if it wasn’t for the fact that Clement is so short of quality in this team.

The academy product will likely get some more leeway as he is young and homegrown but is part of an attacking unit that, Wolfsburg loanee Vaclav Cerny aside, looks short of the required quality.

Todd Cantwell has asked with leave, while Ianis Hagi has been frozen out despite wanting to stay [Sky Sports, 12 August], and fellow Gers product also Alex Lowry looks set to leave as well [Football Scotland, 8 August] despite the latter two showing their ability for the B Team.

Following the controversial loss to Dynamo Kyiv in the the Champions League qualifier in midweek a win was the most important thing against St Johnstone, but there is a long way to go to right this ship, and without a lot of activity before the deadline it doesn’t look sustainable.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues fans would not accept one attacking ace coming in to “save” the team.
