'Lucky': Jamie O'Hara thinks there was a major refereeing error during Tottenham's 4-3 win vs Manchester United
Major refereeing error????
Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in the semi-final of the EFL Cup following a thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United.
Spurs opened the scoring through Dominic Solanke in the first half. Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham’s lead after the break before Solanke found the net again to make it 3-0.
Two mistakes from Fraser Forster reduced the deficit to just one, and United continued to push. But, a Son Heung-min goal straight from the corner sealed the game for the hosts. Jonny Evans scored late in the game, but that wasn’t enough to change the result.
Tottenham fan and pundit Jamie O’Hara feels one big decision went against Manchester United’s way on Thursday night.
Jamie O’Hara says Tottenham got lucky vs Manchester United because of a refereeing error
Tottenham should’ve won the game against Manchester United comfortably.
They were 3-0 up in the 62nd minute, and if they had just managed the game properly, they would’ve had an easy evening.
However, Postecoglou’s style of football gave Manchester United chances to score, and with a little help from Forster, they made it 3-2.
The game was in the balance at that point, but Son’s goal straight from the corner pushed it beyond United’s reach.
Altay Bayindir was furious with the goal and charged towards the referee to point out that he was fouled by Lucas Bergvall just before the ball went in. However, the goal was given, and that proved to be the difference in the end.
O’Hara says Tottenham got ‘lucky’ there as Bayindir was definitely fouled – he felt referee John Brooks was wrong to award the goal.
He said on talkSPORT: “Let me tell you right, I said ‘I guarantee you Man United score three goals’, guaranteed! They did.
“It was lucky that Son gets a lucky one from the corner, it goes in. But it’s a foul. Bergvall fouls the keeper. You can argue he should do better, but it’s a foul.”
Why VAR was not used for Tottenham vs Manchester United in the EFL Cup
If the incident between Bergvall and Bayindir took place in the Premier League, the VAR would’ve had a second look at that. They could’ve even ruled the goal out.
However, in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup, VAR was not in play for any of the games.
That’s because the EFL wants no club to have an unfair advantage in the early rounds – teams in the lower leagues don’t have VAR cameras installed in their stadiums.
When Tottenham take on Liverpool in the semi-final, VAR will be in place and will work as we’ve seen it in the Premier League over the last few years.
We’re sure there will be more scrutiny on what’s going on inside the box during corners then.
