Ian Ladyman was delighted to see James Tarkowski prove him wrong with a “magnificent” performance for Everton against Wolves on Wednesday.

The centre-back excelled as the Toffees cruised to a 4-0 victory over Gary O’Neil’s side at Goodison Park on 4 December and the Daily Mail journalist watched him in action live.

Ladyman, who was admittedly critical of Tarkowski’s display in their 4-0 loss to Manchester United on Sunday [1 December], was left with no option but to wax lyrical of him after Wednesday.

“I was critical of him as Everton lost 4-0 at Old Trafford at the weekend. He was magnificent against Wolves, what a performance that was!”, Ladyman said on the Mail’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast [5 December].

“I do love it when you see a sportsman, sportswoman, an athlete come back from a difficult performance and produce one like that.

“It just points to the incredible mental strength that professional athletes do have. He was fantastic last night.”

The result saw Everton bring an end to their five-game winless run in the Premier League, thus moving five points away from the relegation zone.

Ashley Young’s 10th-minute free-kick goal also ended the Toffees’ four-game goal drought, with a goal from Orel Mangala and two own goals from Craig Dawson then completing the win for the hosts.

Tarkowski, meanwhile, thought he had scored when he headed home a Dwight McNeil free-kick in the 16th minute.

However, the goal was disallowed after Mangala was deemed to have blocked Mario Lemina from defending the set-piece from an offside position.

The 32-year-old nevertheless imposed himself as a dominant figure in defence, keeping the Wolves attack, including the in-form Matheus Cunha, at bay.

Dyche’s side, including Keane, will take a lot of confidence from that game as they prepare for the final Merseyside derby against Liverpool in the Premier League at Goodison Park on Saturday [7 December].
