Manchester United fans have a lot to say about Archie Gray after losing to Tottenham in Carabao Cup

Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup after losing 4-3 to Tottenham Hotspur in Thursday’s quarter-final in North London.

The Red Devils were dismal in the first hour of the game as Spurs built up a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead via Dominic Solanke’s brace either side of Dejan Kulusevski’s goal.

To their credit – and also due to a shaky display by Fraser Forster – Manchester United got back to within a goal of Spurs thanks to goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo.

However, Son Heung-min’s late goal direct from a corner gave Tottenham a cushion that made Jonny Evans’ injury-time header little more than a consolation.

Man United fans noted how Archie Gray, an 18-year-old midfielder, was playing at centre-back for Spurs, and doing a pretty good job against the Red Devils too.

Manchester United fans stunned their team struggled against Archie Gray

Red Devils fans despaired both at how their front line could not get the better of a teenager playing out of position and how Gray seemingly played better than their own defence.

“I still can’t believe an 18-year-old out of position CB in Archie Gray played miles better than our whole defence,” said one supporter.

“Archie Gray just blocking all our shots. What kind of problem is this,” added another.

Another fan said: “Our other striker couldn’t win a battle against Dragusin and Archie Gray.”

And one wrote: “Today Rasmus Hojlund struggled against Archie Gray who’s not even a CB by trade. I think I’ve seen enough now.”

Some Man United fans, meanwhile, simply praised Gray for how good he is.

“Archie Gray’s too good man, what a player,” said one supporter.

How the media rated Archie Gray v Man United

Football.london gave Gray a 7 out of 10 rating and wrote: ‘Another decent showing as a centre-back and there’s little he or Dragusin could do to compensate when Forster is going to have a double moment like that.’

Likewise, The Express awarded the Tottenham gem a 7 out of 10 and wrote: ‘Not a natural centre-back, but does seem to be learning. Twice, he crucially got himself in the way of close-range shots in the first half.’

Meanwhile, the Evening Standard went with an 8 out of 10 for Gray as they wrote: ‘Blocked on-target efforts from Antony and Christian Eriksen in assured display at centre-back.’
