Marc Cucurella was quick to make light of his unfortunate choice of footwear after Chelsea came from behind to beat Tottenham in an action-packed London derby.

A brace from Cole Palmer, as well as goals from Jadon Sancho and Enzo Fernandez, saw Chelsea claim a 4-3 win to keep the pressure on Liverpool at the top of the table.

But Enzo Maresca’s side were made to work after they went two goals down after just 11 minutes following goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski.

Cucurella was particularly to blame in both instances, having gifted Spurs possession when he lost his footing on the ball.

The Spanish international ran to the touchline to change his boots after Kulusevski made it 2-0, with pundit Jamie Carragher describing the situation as ’embarrasing’.

‘Cucurella’s coming to the bench, don’t blame anyone else – it’s your own fault son!’ Liverpool legend Carragher said on commentary duties.

‘Absolute schoolboy stuff. Embarrassing. He slips again. Look at him shrugging his shoulders. Did he not do a warm-up?’

With his blushes sparred at full-time, Cucurella was able to make light of his unfortunate start to the game, writing on X: ‘It almost slipped away…but proud of the amazing team effort to turn things around.’

And on Instagram, the left-back posted a picture showing he had already discarded the culpable footwear.

‘Sorry blues,’ he captioned the post which has since been deleted.

Speaking at full-time, Chelsea teammate Sancho praised the defender for his response following the tricky start.

‘They’re going in the bin after this game,’ he told the BBC. ‘After the mistakes, I thought he played fantastic. We believe in Cucu.’

Chelsea are now just four points behind Liverpool, although the Reds do have a game in hand following the postponement of the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
