Ally McCoist was stunned after Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin produced a sharp challenge on James Maddison during his side’s Europa League clash with Tottenham.

It was an entertaining encounter between the two sides at Ibrox on Thursday night (12 December) which eventually ended in a 1-1 draw.

Hamza Igamane put the hosts ahead early in the second half before substitute Dejan Kulusevski delivered a late equaliser for Ange Postecoglou’s side, but Rangers will arguably feel they were the better side for significant periods, showing plenty of intent and desire.

One moment that highlighted that came 74 minutes in, when Raskin went snapping into a 50-50 with Maddison in midfield, coming out on top in that duel to leave McCoist delighted.

Describing the challenge while on co-commentary for TNT Sports (9:33pm) the former Rangers striker said: “It’s brilliant pressing from Raskin again! He’s all over Maddison. He takes a touch thinking he’s got a split-second, but he doesn’t have!”

This was one of just a number of moments across the course of this game in which the midfielder stood out on Thursday.

The 23-year-old covered a huge amount of ground across the course of 90 minutes, and was relentless in putting pressure on Tottenham.

His contributions were therefore vital to Rangers picking up another useful point for their Europa League campaign, that they will feel was the minimum they deserved.

Given he was making this sort of impact against the likes of Maddison – who has excelled against the likes of Premier League champions Man City recently – may make this especially satisfying for Raskin.

That will give him plenty of confidence going into a crucial League Cup final with Celtic on Sunday afternoon, which will encourage Rangers too.

But after being hit with some other injury concerns ahead of the weekend in that game, those at Ibrox will hope Raskin has not run himself into the ground too much with his efforts here.
