Michael Stewart: Rangers man 'Dispirited' at Ibrox despite recent contract developments

Michael Stewart has suggested that Dujon Sterling has become “dispirited” at Rangers, despite new contract developments.

The Englishman has struggled to hold down a consistent place in Philippe Clement’s starting XI so far this season, despite impressing all over the pitch in a variety of roles during his first season at Ibrox.

Clement’s side announced before the international break that the former Chelsea man had penned a new contract to extend his stay at Ibrox but Premier Sports pundit Stewart isn’t convinced he will be happy with his current position.

Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club (7 October, 31:22) he said: “I wouldn’t agree that Sterling has been really effective when he’s come on this season.

“To me, he looks dispirited a little bit because he’s obviously not playing as much. I’m not saying that he’s looking terrible, because he’s not.”

What has happened to Dujon Sterling at Rangers and Ibrox?

Every footballer wants to be playing week in and week out and Sterling is unlikely to be any different. The Englishman won’t have enjoyed watching on from the sidelines, particularly in big European matches under the lights.

But the former Chelsea man has almost become a victim of his own versatility. His willingness to feature out of position has meant that he hasn’t been able to make on position his own during his first season in Glasgow.

While he is viewed as a utility man, it is going to be very hard for him to force James Tavernier out of the side at right-back, take Vaclav Cerny’s position on the wing, or even take Mohamed Diomande’s place at the heart of midfield.

Sterling needs to make one position his own and impress in it if he wants to be a regular starter. If and when he manages to take his Rangers career by the scruff of the neck, he will likely become a lot less “dispirited” with his situation.
