Former Celtic forward Moussa Dembele mocked Rangers after their 3-0 defeat in the Old Firm derby on Sunday [1 September].
The Gers put up little resistance at Celtic Park as goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor capped off a resounding victory for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Dembele, who notched seven goals and four assists in 10 appearances against Rangers during his three-year stint in Glasgow, couldn’t help twisting the knife on his X account [1 September] after the result.
He said: “Why are we still playing them…?? Waste of time – But enjoying to see them crash again and again.”
Rangers have a lot of work to do to catch Celtic after Old Firm defeat
After a summer rebuild that saw 10 players arrive at the Light Blues and 10 players depart, the gulf in class between the two Glaswegian sides couldn’t be further apart.
All hope of challenging Celtic at the Scottish Premiership summit has been wiped away as the Hoops ran out a routine and comfortable victory against their SPFL rivals.
James Tavernier produced a shocking performance at right-back [Sky Sports], the captain should consider himself lucky that he was allowed to remain on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.
Philippe Clement will have to return to the drawing board at Rangers, the loss to Celtic is a catastrophic setback for a club that needs the riches of Champions League football to overturn their financial woes.
The Hoops seem destined to storm to another SPFL title this season, the Light Blues were played off the pitch at Celtic Park and there is a danger that will become a running theme in the Old Firm clashes ahead this year.
Rangers, only two days since the summer transfer window slammed shut, will need to look to the winter window to strengthen a side that right now just does not look capable of challenging for the title.
Clement knew the extent of the task ahead when he extended his contract with the club but the humiliating defeat on Sunday is a damning reminder of how much work there is to be done at the Gers.
