Everton will “never” be relegated from the Premier League with Sean Dyche in the Goodison Park dugout, according to Paul Merson.
Speaking on Sky Sports News (2 November, 2:55pm), Merson was asked about a lack of goals at Goodison Park ahead of the Blues’ 1-0 Premier League loss to Southampton in the Premier League.
Initially, Merson was confused by the question having been “daydreaming” by his admission, but then doubled down on his view that Dyche remains the right man to keep the Toffees up.
“Who? I wasn’t listening, sorry, sorry, I was daydreaming,” he said.
“They play the same way every time – it’s not a problem for them. I never see them getting relegated with Sean Dyche at the helm, I really don’t.
“I never have, even when they’ve been right down the bottom – they’ll be miles too good to go down this season.
“They’re solid, and he’s thick-skinned – he doesn’t play to the crowd, he picks his team and then that’s it, he plays his way. He doesn’t care about the noises around him and that’s a big plus.”
Sean Dyche has proven he’s the right man for Everton
Despite suffering a first defeat in six matches on the south coast, the Toffees remain four points clear of the Premier League drop zone having shown they’ve more than enough quality to stay up this season.
While no fan on Merseyside wants to see survival as the be-all and end-all for a club with such a storied history, circumstances at Goodison in recent years have made this easier said than done.
Dyche’s leadership and backs-against-the-wall mentality proved to be the difference for the Blues last year, leading a late-season surge of form to stay up comfortably despite two points deductions.
Being hit with similar setbacks this time around doesn’t look likely, but Dyche will still need to bring all the expertise he has to ensure the Toffees are a Premier League side come the summer of 2025.
Dan Friedkin’s impending takeover and stadium move to Bramley-Moore Dock provides a glimpse into the future, but with the here-and-now goal being to stay up, there couldn’t be anyone better at the helm.
