Newcastle United are pushing ahead with a deal to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, according to Luke Edwards.

The Telegraph journalist reported on Saturday (22 June) that, while work is still to be done between the two clubs and talks are not finished, the Magpies are closing in on their long-standing target.

Edwards broke the news last month [23 May] that Newcastle have been tracking the 27-year-old for the past two years as a potential replacement for Callum Wilson who could leave St James’ Park this summer. [The Telegraph]

Everton to lose Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Newcastle United ramp up transfer efforts

While Calvert-Lewin is very well-known for his injury problems with the Toffees, the club would have likely been relegated to the Championship without his involvement last season.

The striker hit a purple patch at the perfect time, notching four goals and one assist in, what could be, his final seven appearances for the Evertonians.

With 247 total appearances under his belt for the Toffees since arriving from Sheffield United in 2016, Calvert-Lewin has become a fan favourite amongst the supporters and will be a huge miss if he is to move on this summer.

Sean Dyche will certainly need to bring in attacking reinforcements this summer to account for the void set to be left by the striker’s absence, with only Beto as a backup right now.

Sean Dyche will want new signings at Everton this summer.

The Portuguese forward registered just five goals in his first season in England, with Abdoulaye Doucoure being joint-top goalscorer with Calvert-Lewin.

Despite the lack of goals, Everton’s impeccable defensive record meant they were able to secure safety in the division, and without the points deductions, would have finished in 12th place.

In other Everton news, a BBC journalist has shared whether Arsenal intend to pursue with their interest in Amadou Onana.
