Niklas Fullkrug sends disappointed message to West Ham fans after Irons latest

Niklas Fullkrug has posted an Instagram message to West Ham fans after he returned from injury to score a consolation goal against Leicester City.

The Hammers lost 3-1 to the Foxes at King Power Stadium on 3 December. This leaves them just six points above the relegation zone and heaps pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui, who has managed just four wins since taking charge of the club.

Football Insider revealed that West Ham’s hierarchy are set to meet today (4 December) to discuss Lopetegui’s future at the club.

One positive for Hammers fans after leaving the East Midlands was the performance of their £27million striker [BBC Sport], who finally netted his first goal for the club.

Despite silenced celebrations after scoring his stoppage time goal, the German took to Instagram to send a heartfelt message to fans, saying: “Felt good to finally be back on the pitch after a long time & score my first goal for the club.

“Unfortunately, it was not enough and definitely not the result we were hoping for.”

However, while Füllkrug’s return is a welcome boost, it may have come too late to save the manager who signed him.

Speculation about Lopetegui’s replacement is already rife, with names such as Sergio Conceição and Massimiliano Allegri linked to the role.

The German striker missed months of action after playing just 63 minutes in West Ham’s first three league matches this season.

His prolonged absence was due to an Achilles tendon injury, compounded by a setback that delayed his return until December. Füllkrug, 31, had not featured for the Hammers since August.

With Michail Antonio and Danny Ings scoring just two Premier League goals between them this season, West Ham fans will hope the former Borussia Dortmund man can help solve their attacking woes.

The Hammers host Wolves at the London Stadium on Monday night (9 December), and by then, there could be a new face in the dugout.

As for Füllkrug, he will be eager to build on his promising return and add to his goal tally as the team fights to turn their season around.

In other news, West Ham manager Lopetegui had a heated confrontation with defender Jean-Clair Todibo during the half-time break.
