‘No’: Graeme Souness disagrees with what Simon Jordan has just said about Mo Salah at Liverpool

Liverpool may have to start planning for life without Mohamed Salah.

Salah is a Liverpool legend, but his contract is up next summer, and, as of yet, no agreement has been reached.

Salah’s contract talks are going well, but there’s still a serious chance that he could leave the club at the end of the season.

Of course, if Salah leaves Liverpool, the Reds will need a replacement, and speaking on the Up Front Podcast, Simon Jordan and Graeme Souness have been discussing the idea of Liverpool replacing their star man.

Jordan suggested that Liverpool could replace Salah for just £70m, but Souness scoffed at that idea, claiming that an adequate Salah replacement would cost twice as much, and such a player may not even exist.

Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan disagree over Mohamed Salah replacement

Souness completely disagreed with Jordan’s view that Salah could be replaced for just £70m.

Indeed, Souness says that a Salah replacement would cost a lot more than that, and such a player may not even exist.

Salah is a potential Ballon d’Or winner based on his performances this season, so he would be very difficult to replace to say the least.

“And if you look at the whole construct of the deal in and of itself, I can’t see why Liverpool wouldn’t do this deal. I don’t know what you think, Henry. To replace Salah is going to cost about 70 million quid, isn’t it?” Jordan asked.

“No,” Souness said.

“To replace Salah? You don’t think so, Graeme?” Jordan asked.

“Double that, and they don’t exist,” Souness said.

“To replace 30 goals, there isn’t a player out there.

“And you’re spending a lot more than 100 million to get it. Because the minute Liverpool come knocking, A, because it’s Liverpool, B, because they’re in the Premier League, and C, because you’ve now lost your top goal scorer, and you know they’re under pressure to bat, they’ll get, they’ll pay a premium on a premium on a premium. So in a hard place.”

What else did Simon Jordan say about Mohamed Salah?

Jordan also made another point about Salah on the podcast, claiming that his decision to publicly comment on his situation wasn’t clever.

Indeed, the pundit says that Salah hasn’t been very wise in terms of how he’s approached this situation.

“I mean, he’s played this card, whatever card you think it is, and I don’t think it’s clever to play it through the media. I don’t think it ingratiates you to the people that are going to write the checks out in the end,” Jordan said.

“What it does is it categorises you in a certain way. And so they don’t forget it. They’ll take it as a commercial view because they understand the game, but they won’t like it.”

Can Liverpool find a cheap Salah replacement?

On one hand, Souness is right, buying a player of Salah’s quality would easily cost over £100m.

However, as Jordan says, this can be done much cheaper, and if you look at some of the top performing wide players in Europe, you can see that.

Top performing wingers in EuropeClubGoals this seasonPrice when signed
Mohamed SalahLiverpool12£34m
RaphinhaBarcelona13£55m
Cole PalmerChelsea7£40m
Bradley BarcolaPSG10£40m

There are players out there who score almost as many goals as Salah who didn’t cost the earth. The trick is to find these players before they become stars or their stock is slightly lower.

Salah himself cost Liverpool just £34m, so if they look in the right places for the right players, the Reds may be able to find someone who can come close to Salah’s output while not costing the earth.

Liverpool probably won’t be able to buy a player who is immediately as good as Salah on the cheap, but perhaps they could find the next Mohamed Salah for a decent fee.
