Chris Sutton has slammed Mikel Arteta after the manager hit out at Everton during a goalless draw against Arsenal on Saturday.
The Gunners dominated for much of the 0-0 clash at the Emirates Stadium on 14 December, keeping 77 per cent of possession and unleashing 13 shots compared to the Toffees’ two shots off target [FotMob].
Unsurprisingly, Jordan Pickford was one of the stars of the match, making five saves to frustrate Arteta and his players, avoiding defeat at the Emirates for the first time since 2021.
Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast [16 December], Ian Ladyman said: “Mikel Arteta was talking after as though Everton had some kind of responsibility to come out and play.
Sutton replied: “Oh, not that old one,” before Ladyman continued: “I thought it was frankly ridiculous. Mikel, you’ve got the top players in your team so you should find a way.”
Mikel Arteta talking nonsense after Everton draw v Arsenal
Of course, Arteta is frustrated by his side dropping points against a team currently fighting for Premier League survival, but his comments are massively out of touch.
After 15 matches, the Toffees are just three points above the relegation zone and face a very real possibility of being relegated to the Championship before moving to the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium.
That would be a massive blow, especially for the Friedkin Group, with Sean Dyche facing plenty of stick for his side’s performances so far this season, but the draw against Arsenal was a positive.
Keeping clean sheets has been an issue this term, made more surprising after such a solid defence in the Premier League last season, and the fans are crying out for change before it is too late.
Claiming a point away at the Gunners shows exactly what Dyche’s players are capable of, and while there was no attacking display on show, not losing was far more important than winning.
In other Everton news, David Moyes is surely set for a Goodison Park return as new developments emerge.
