'One man defence' - BBC pundit wowed by Everton ace v Man Utd

Jarrad Branthwaite was described as “basically a one-man defence” by BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin as Everton were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United on Sunday.

The Toffees struggled against a Red Devils side full of vigour playing in Ruben Amorim’s first Premier League home game.

But Nevin, speaking in the first half, was still impressed by the way Branthwaite was playing in a defence that otherwise struggled.

Speaking on commentary for BBC Radio 5 Live [1 December, 13:39], Nevil said: “How good is Jarrad Branthwaite? He is basically a one-man defence.”

There were reasonable hopes that Everton would be able to get a result at Old Trafford but it turned into another afternoon to forget for Sean Dyche and his Toffees side as United ran out comfortable winners.

Branthwaite is an undeniable star and will one day make the Toffees hundreds of millions of pounds because there is no ceiling on his talent – that’s how good he is.

But today he was powerless to do anything as Everton crumbled at Old Trafford in what is a damning indictment of the team’s performances under Dyche this season.

The boss has been under huge pressure now for quite some time and this result, which marks the start of a daunting run of games in December and with the matches that are on the horizon things could get considerably worse before they start to get better.

Dyche needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat before it’s too late.
