'One of the best': Paul Merson wowed by Liverpool player who's 'up there' with Kevin De Bruyne on int'l duty

Liverpool and Manchester City have grown to be rivals in the Premier League but Paul Merson feels as if a player from either side have some impressive comparisons.

Arne Slot will have his sights set on getting Liverpool back to where fans feel they belong as Premier League champions after a couple of years of Manchester City dominance.

Kevin De Bruyne has played a big part in the Manchester club’s dominance, especially last season after his return from injury as he bagged six goals and 18 assists in just 26 games.

Both Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah have been the main men for the Reds this season in the attacking third, with the pair combining for more goals than most Premier League teams have at this stage.

Interestingly, it has been claimed that Diaz could be offered a new deal at the club and Salah’s situation is already well known.

However, one other Liverpool player has been catching the eye recently…

Paul Merson says Liverpool player is ‘up there’ with Kevin De Bruyne

Most of the Liverpool squad have jetted off on international duty as various qualifying competitions and Nations League games are set to take place over the next week.

One player who finds himself in the England squad is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Paul Merson appeared on Sky Sports as a guest to speak about the make up of the England squad and some of the players involved, and he had some rather big compliments to pay the 25-year-old.

“I’ve always said this. I think he’s one of the best passers in the Premier League, I think he’s up there with your Kevin de Bruynes passing wise.

I think when he went and played in midfield you’re not gonna get that passing range, there’s six players in there, it’s compact, teams will sit 10 behind the ball, so Trent doesn’t get the ball.

If he plays at right-back for England like hopefully he will in the next lot of games, he will get so much of the ball. And if you give him time he can find anybody anywhere on the football pitch, his vision is second to none”.

Kevin De Bruyne is the quickest to ever reach 100 assists in the history of the Premier League and arguably one of the most creative players to ever grace the top-flight, so for any player to be compared to the Belgian is quite the compliment.

Liverpool must keep hold of Trent Alexander-Arnold

As Merson says, the 25-year-old is arguably one of the best passers in the world, let alone the Premier League. He still has his best years ahead of him and is starting to show the discipline that’s been missing from him personally in the defensive third in recent years for the Reds.

After being spotted with Jude Bellingham during the summer holiday period, you can’t blame Jamie Carragher for being worried that Liverpool could lose Trent to Real Madrid next year.

Barcelona are also thought to be really big fans of Trent, so there will no doubt be a line of potential suitors if the Reds or the defender decide to part ways.

With this amount of suitors it really will come down to the player’s preference and exactly how highly the Englishman values himself, as he currently earns £170k-p/w less than Salah.
