Paul Merson fired a stark warning to Southampton regarding their style of play but still expects the Saints to beat Everton on Saturday (2 November).
The Blues face Russell Martin’s winless side at St Mary’s on the back of an excellent run of form after Beto scored a 94th-minute equaliser at Goodison Park in the 1-1 draw against Fulham last time out.
Everton are on a five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League. However, predicting the result of this weekend’s match-up for Sportskeeda [31 October], Merson believes Southampton will claim a 2-1 win despite playing like they’re on a “PlayStation”.
He said: “Everton will know exactly how Southampton will want to play against them. The Saints will take a million chances by trying to play out from the back and Sean Dyche will have a plan ready. Someone should tell Southampton this stuff only works on PlayStation!
“Everton are now five games unbeaten and are enjoying a bit of a good run. They will squeeze Southampton and it will only be a matter of time before Everton get the ball and score in my opinion.
“If Southampton and Ipswich don’t win this weekend, that’s 20 league games between them without a win. These teams are definitely in trouble.”
Everton have all the firepower needed to beat Southampton
While Merson predicts the first Premier League win of the season for Southampton despite failing to name a single reason why the result will go in the hosts’ favour, Everton are surprisingly not the overwhelming favourites heading into the tie.
Admittedly, the Blues are approaching the match with an air of uncertainty about whether star talisman Dwight McNeil will be fit to feature, but still, the side boasts plenty of firepower to record a comprehensive victory on the South Coast.
Iliman Ndiaye has been a revelation since arriving on Merseyside this summer and offers a fresh dimension to the attack, which has been lacking in previous years, and is more than capable of heeding the goal-scoring burden should McNeil miss out.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is intent on putting the summer speculation behind him and focused on etching his name in Everton history. The 27-year-old is yet to replicate the form of previous years, but as exclusively revealed by Goodison News, negotiations are ongoing over a new long-term deal.
The Blues have already faced a winless side in the Premier League in recent weeks, dispatching Ipswich Town comfortably in a 2-0 win at Portman Road. With Southampton sitting at the foot of the league table, there is no reason this feat cannot be repeated this weekend.
However, previously winless Crystal Palace put their first three points on the board with a 1-0 victory against Tottenham last weekend and Dyche should recognise the threat Southampton pose, as the Toffees look to avoid a potential banana skin to put as much breathing room between themselves and the relegation zone as possible.
