Newcastle United are unlikely to land a deal to sign Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the club’s financial restrictions under profit and sustainability rules have restricted their ability to spend.
Eddie Howe is keen to be ambitious in the transfer market, but has been limited by the financial rules, with the club forced to consider other targets.
O’Rourke has explained that the only way Newcastle would be able to afford a move for Gyokeres would be if they sold Alexander Isak for “big money.”
The 26-year-old is not expected to leave Sporting in January, while clubs are reluctant to stump up his £66million release clause mid-way through the season.
This comes amid interest from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United after his impressive goalscoring displays in Portugal so far this season.
Football Insider revealed on 1 November that the striker could be tempted to join Ruben Amorim at Man United in the summer regardless of whether they have Champions League football.
Newcastle United unlikely to land Viktor Gyokeres deal in January
Gyokeres has become one of the most highly rated and highly coveted forwards in Europe as a result of his stunning record in front of goal since joining Sporting.
The striker made the move away from Coventry in 2023, and has gone on to score 68 goals and provide 19 assists in 72 appearances in Portugal.
So far this season, he has scored 25 goals and provided four assists in 22 games across all competitions, including a Champions League hattrick against Manchester City.
As well as the elite clubs in Europe, his form had inspired interest from Newcastle in an ambitious move, but their financial situation is set to restrict them.
Meanwhile, there has been ongoing speculation about the future of Isak at St James’ Park amid interest from Arsenal, but the club are reluctant to see their star man leave.
Newcastle and Howe are keen to back up their ambitions in the transfer market and to bolster their squad heading into the second half of the season, but will have to be smart in their progress.
In other news, Newcastle are readying a ‘huge’ Bryan Mbeumo offer.
