Patrick Stewart demands SFA answers after Rangers v Celtic penalty controversy - report

Rangers have demanded answers from the Scottish FA after they were denied a penalty in the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic at Hampden on Sunday, according to Rangers Review.

The outlet reported via their website on Monday (16 December) that one of Patrick Stewart’s first tasks after taking charge as the Gers’ new CEO was to contact the FA and referees chief Willie Collum.

Philippe Clement’s side want clarification after VAR official Alan Muir failed to intervene and award them a penalty after Liam Scales pulled Vaclav Cerny down at the edge of the box in their League Cup final defeat to Celtic on 15 December.

The incident happened in the first half of extra time with the scoreline reading 3-3. Brendan Rodgers’ side went on to win 5-4 in penalties.

Rangers announced Stewart’s appointment in November, but set 16 December as the start date for him as they wanted him to take charge after the games against Tottenham and Celtic [The Herald]. He has nevertheless had to get straight to work at Ibrox.

It now remains to be seen what the FA will say regarding the penalty controversy at Hampden.

With Mohamed Diomande and Cerny unable to continue playing in the second half of extra time, the Light Blues were evidently running out of steam.

One can only wonder what would have happened if VAR correctly intervened and awarded the Gers a penalty for the foul on Cerny.

James Tavernier has come in for a lot of criticism this season, but he would have definitely backed himself to convert a spot-kick even under pressure had it come to it.

Instead, Clement and co saw their defence of the League Cup title come to an unsuccessful end.

They will be determined to return to winning ways when they host Dundee FC at home on Saturday (21 December).
