Paul Scholes fires warning to ‘attacking’ Man Utd star over 2024-25 playing time
'It wasn’t quite working [last season]...'
Paul Scholes has fired a huge warning to ‘attacking’ Man Utd star Mason Mount in regards to his playing time for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Mount has struggled at Old Trafford since he left boyhood club Chelsea to join the Red Devils last summer, although he has been plagued by injury problems.
He’s played 20 games for Erik ten Hag’s side so far – 14 of those coming in the Premier League – with Mount missing a long run of matches over a calf issue.
Legendary United midfielder Scholes has warned Mount that things are unlikely to change in his second season at the club, due to the presence of Bruno Fernandes.
‘The middle of the pitch is an area where it is just f****** empty most of the time,’ Scholes said in a new fan debate on The Overlap YouTube channel.
‘Team just break through us all day long. You (fan) mention Casemiro’s legs are going a bit… He’s never been that type of player anyway. mas
‘He was never that quick and he had great players around him. When Mason Mount came into the team… I think Erik ten Hag is a coach who likes to go for it.
‘He had to change, because it wasn’t quite working, but he tried to play Casemiro with Mount and Bruno Fernandes. Two No.10s… That quickly changed.
‘Mount got injured. Are we going to see a fit Mount this year? Even if he is fit, he won’t play instead of Bruno. That’s the only position I see him playing.’
Scholes made similar comments in November 2023 on the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel.
‘I think he’d like to play where Bruno Fernandes plays,’ Scholes added. ‘I think the manager signed him as an attacking midfield player.
‘But it upsets the balance of the team and upsets the legs he has in midfield.
‘I really think he wanted to play him with Fernandes – but the two of them playing in the team, it just doesn’t seem to be working now.’
