James Maddison took to social media to react to the Fantasy Premier League not awarding him with an assist as Tottenham beat Southampton.
Spurs dismantled the Saints 5-0 away from home on Sunday (15 December) after a spell of five games without a win.
Maddison opened the scoring within the first minute before adding a second goal before halftime, bringing the total to five goals by the break.
However, the 28-year-old wanted more than just his two goals. He claimed on X that he should have also been credited with the assist for Son Heung-min’s goal to make it 2-0, with his cross from the right deflected onto the Korean via Jan Bednarek.
He quoted the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) account on X, which listed “none” as the assist for Son’s goal, and said: “But my intended target was Son… so now what?”
This refers to the FPL rule that a player can be awarded the assist if their “intended target” scores from their pass.
Former Spurs player Peter Crouch also joined the conversation, saying: “What! This is an outrage.”
Tottenham hope for change in form as they back Ange Postecoglou
Englishman Maddison has faced criticism for his time under Postecoglou, with some claiming he has yet to “prove himself” under the Australian.
Last season, injuries disrupted any momentum he had at the start of the campaign, but he has started 16 out of 22 appearances this term. He has contributed 11 goals and assists in the Premier League.
The Australian has come under immense pressure this season, with reports suggesting that his job could be at risk.
However, the Lilywhites are reportedly committed to backing their manager, with sources indicating that he already has plans for the January transfer window.
Football Insider revealed on 13 December that signing a new centre-back has emerged as one of the club’s priorities ahead of the January transfer window.
Tottenham currently sit 10th in the table, five points adrift of a potential Champions League spot.
It seems they will be active in the transfer market, and with fans frustrated by the performances of players like Dominic Solanke and Timo Werner, their attacking options may need strengthening too.
The North London club have been in this position of a managerial merry-go-round before, so it’s significant that they’ve stuck by their coach.
A heavy win at the bottom side in the table, with Russell Martin subsequently sacked, was the least most would have expected in the circumstances and now needs to be used as a platform to build from.
In other news, the Spurs chairman has been heavily criticised by a Premier League legend regarding his ownership.
