Stuart Pearce has told Jarrad Branthwaite to snub a move to Manchester United and stay at Everton for at least another season.
The Toffees defender is a transfer target for the Red Devils this summer and reportedly is reluctant to pen a new contract at Goodison Park unless he is offered the same terms tabled by their Premier League rivals [Daily Mail, 25 July].
Although talkSPORT pundit Pearce admits the centre-back should be flattered by United’s interest, he thinks another year of working under Sean Dyche would be the perfect thing for the England international.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (27 July, 12:52) he said: “I think at his age it wouldn’t be a bad thing to stay at Everton for another season under Sean Dyche.
“But, you’d be very, very flattered with the clubs with the potential of Manchester United come knocking and listen the power is with the player at this moment in time.
“Don’t get too excited or too downbeat if a transfer happens or doesn’t happen, that would be my advice to him.
“Let things pan out and if the clubs can agree on a deal obviously there’s a sticking point at the moment with the valuation from Everton and the valuation from Manchester United or other suitors.”
Will Jarrad Branthwaite exit Everton amid Manchester United transfer speculation?
Every Everton supporter will agree with Pearce’s assessment that staying at Goodison Park for at least one more season would be the perfect outcome for both Branthwaite and the Toffees this summer.
Unless Manchester United meet the Blues’ asking price, the England international won’t be going anywhere during the transfer window as Dyche’s side has shown no intention of dropping their valuation.
Even if Branthwaite continues to refuse to sign a new deal on Merseyside, he is under contract for a fair while yet so it will be incredibly hard to force his way out of the club even if he is desperate to make the move to Old Trafford.
Hopefully, he will put pen to paper on a new deal with the Toffees as that might be enough to end United’s interest, but that doesn’t seem to be close unless Everton suddenly up their offer out of nowhere.
Supporters can only hope Branthwaite follows Pearce’s advice and remains a Blue for at least one more campaign.
