Paul Robinson has ruled out a move to Tottenham for Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher during the January transfer window but he does believe the goalkeeper will want to quit Anfield.
Spurs were one of the Premier League teams vying for the 26-year-old’s signature in 2023, as per the Irish Independent, who now seems to be ready for a new challenge away from Liverpool.
Ange Postecoglou is now without first-choice shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario after he suffered a fractured ankle last month, though Robinson does not believe a potential move could resurface.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “They won’t spend that money because Kelleher wants to go somewhere and be No.1. Vicario is the No.1 at Spurs so they won’t see the need to spend money.
“Liverpool have made forward plans for the future with Marmadashvilli coming in, which is a clever signing, so Kelleher won’t want to go somewhere and fight for his place.
“He’s proven his ability to be first-choice this year and he’s a top-quality goalkeeper. I don’t see the club investing the money needed to buy him and I don’t think it’s an option for Kelleher.
“It’s a bit of a non-starter, in all honesty.”
Tottenham to sign Guglielmo Vicario replacement in Caoimhin Kelleher?
Kelleher would certainly be an upgrade on Postecoglou’s current goalkeeper, Fraser Forster, who has a clear deficiency when it comes to passing out from the back.
However, the manager has already stated the club’s lack of urgency to bring in a new goalkeeper despite the news that Vicario could be sidelined for months rather than weeks [BBC Sport].
Forster has now made six appearances since the injury blow, keeping just one clean sheet in that period, but Postecoglou has also been shaken by injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
An additional goalkeeper signing would help secure things at the back but it would only be a short-term fix until Vicario returns from his injury.
In other Tottenham news, it has been revealed when Spurs could pull the trigger on Ange Postecoglou’s sacking.
