Rangers are “sensible” to want a buy clause included in a potential loan deal for Leeds United attacker Joe Gelhardt, Carlton Palmer says.
The Gers are interested in the 22-year-old, and while the Championship outfit are open to parting ways with him in January on loan, the Light Blues want to include an option to make his deal permanent [TEAMtalk, 27 November].
Speaking to Football League World [29 November], Palmer understands why the Bears would want some sort of control over the Englishman’s future if he were to join them temporarily.
“One of the clubs really keen on him is Glasgow Rangers. They would prefer to strike a permanent deal to take the forward to Ibrox rather than strike a loan deal, or they want a clause where they can buy him after taking him on loan,” he said.
“Which is always a sensible thing to do, because if a player goes out on loan you want the player to do well, but if he does well you want to be in the position to be able to sign him.
“If you don’t have a clause agreed to that, then it becomes a problem, so I understand why clubs aren’t willing to take players unless there’s a clause in place to buy them.”
Joe Gelhardt decent option to reinforce Rangers attack
Philippe Clement has failed to bring the best out of Rangers this season, with the Light Blues’ attack particularly faltering.
The Gers have struggled to find the back of the net consistently, and the Ibrox faithful have witnessed just two goals away from home in the Scottish Premiership in the current campaign.
Cyriel Dessers has been Clement’s first choice in the number nine position, but the Nigeria international has never been a reliable, prolific outlet — frustrating many with his lack of urgency on the field.
Rangers found a new hero in Hamza Igamane in the Europa League on 29 November, scoring a brace in the 4-1 triumph at the Allianz Riviera.
The Moroccan proved that the Belgian manager needs to give other attackers in the squad opportunities to fix their goalscoring issues.
Gelhardt hasn’t been particularly impressive at Leeds, but the Englishman hasn’t been handed many opportunities, playing just 72 minutes this season.
The Light Blues could take a gamble on the 22-year-old, adding much-needed depth to the centre-forward position, and if it works out, then the Bears should be able to get him on a permanent transfer.
