Pundit View: Rangers man to return to Ibrox 'full of confidence' after recent int'l decision

Connor Barron will return to Rangers “full of confidence” after developments over the international break, according to Marvin Bartley.

The Light Blues midfielder had been named in Scotland’s Under-21s squad for the October camp but has been called up to replace Celtic’s James Forrest for the first-team clash with Portugal on Tuesday (15 October).

Although it is unclear whether or not the former Aberdeen man will take to the field for Steve Clarke’s side, Clyde 1 pundit Bartley believes it will have given him a boost after a difficult spell at Ibrox.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (14 October) he said: “It’s a timely boost isn’t it, for Connor Barron. Obviously what he went through in the Lyon game, giving the ball away and conceding the goal.

“These young players, a lot of the time experienced players or managers will say to them there are many ups and downs in football. You’ll have a lot more ups than downs hopefully, but when you do make those sorts of mistakes, you think the world is against you.

“So getting this international call-up will be a timely boost for him and he’ll head back into Rangers full of confidence.”

What has happened to Connor Barron at Rangers and Ibrox?

As Bartley suggests, it would have been easy for Barron to be feeling a bit down on his luck after the defeat to Lyon and having been left out of the starting XI against St Johnstone, but this call-up will have been a boost.

It almost doesn’t matter whether or not he gets to feature against Portugal. The fact that Clarke has called him into the fold shows that the national team manager trusts him and believes he is good enough to play at that level.

That will have likely done wonders for the young midfielders’ confidence and that can only be a good thing for Rangers and Philippe Clement heading into a crucial period in the domestic and European season.

Barron has already shown in his brief Gers career so far that he is more than capable of making an impact on the biggest stage.

As he gets older and more experienced, he will begin to develop that consistency to do it week in and week out.
