Rangers will start conversations over a Jack Butland departure during the transfer window at a minimum of £10million, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist indicated via the outlet’s website on 4 June that Philippe Clement faces the conundrum of needing to replace two goalkeepers this summer after Robby McCrorie turned down a new contract and wants to leave.

The Ibrox number two is believed to have multiple suitors in the Scottish Premiership as well as interest in England but, after Nottingham Forest’s advances for Butland were rejected in January, interest from the Premier League in the star number one also “seems sure to resurface in the coming weeks”.

It is said to have been acknowledged internally at Ibrox when the 31-year-old arrived from Crystal Palace last summer that a return to the Premier League was the “likely” endgame “if all went to plan”, so an offer of sufficient size would be too much for either the player or the club to resist.

Robby McCrorie done with waiting for Rangers top spot

It is unfortunate but understandable that McCrorie would look to depart at this stage, having made just seven first team Rangers appearances despite spending his entire career at the club.

As the Light Blues close in on bringing Liam Kelly back to Glasgow from Motherwell it would appear a pretty favourable move to sell one man and secure a solid replacement for free.

Clement will also need to decide on whether he finds a new third-choice externally or promotes a youngster, after 36-year-old Jon McLaughlin was confirmed as leaving when his contract expires.

But replacing Butland would be a different proposition altogether, even if a big-money sale could potentially fund multiple other signings in another transfer window of change.

Should the Englishman end up leaving after a deal is done to sell McCrorie it would also surely be a major frustration for the younger man, who would have once again missed out on an opportunity to be the Rangers starter.

That the Gers are said to be “desperate” to keep hold of the academy product, according to what a source told Rangers Review, would suggest Clement views him as an option to step up should Butland be sold.

But while his performances and the January interest suggests bids from the English top flight are inevitable for the star keeper there is not currently believed to be any imminent offers on the cards [Alan Nixon, 28 May].

In other Rangers news, recent developments at another club suggest their star man could be on his way to Ibrox.
