Rangers strengthen relations with SPFL after behind-the-scenes hires - report

Patrick Stewart and Malcolm Offord are likely to strengthen relations between Rangers and the SPFL, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported via their website on 28 November that Stewart, who is confirmed to take office as the Gers’ new CEO on 16 December, already knows most of the senior figures in Scottish football.

He made a positive impression on members of the SFA and SPFL boards after spending time with them during the Euros in Germany.

With Offord tipped to be confirmed as the chairman in “coming weeks”, the Light Blues are on course to improve relations with the SPFL after questioning the league over corporate governance [BBC].

The Gers were one of six Premiership clubs that expressed concerns over the autonomy of an independent review into governance.

The SPFL then cited “factual inaccuracies” in the letter sent by the teams in question, leading to the group calling a meeting.

That, though, was the only latest episode in the row between the Ibrox outfit and the league body.

SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan notably apologised to the Light Blues at the conclusion of their sponsorship dispute in July 2023.

An independent review of the league’s operations was commissioned in the wake of that incident.

The SPFL released a draft report in January 2024, only for Rangers and five other clubs to take issue with it.

Nevertheless, relations between the two parties have improved in recent months and it is hoped that Stewart’s own connections will only strengthen it further. Offord is also expected to help the cause with his expertise in politics and business.

In other Rangers news, new Frank Lampard details have emerged out of Ibrox as he takes charge at Coventry City.
