James Tavernier’s departure from Rangers should be completed within a matter of days to Trabzonspor, according to The 4th Official.
The online outlet reported via Patreon on 20 July that multiple sources have indicated that there is buy-in from all sides to get a deal done with the Turkish Super Lig side so the 32-year-old’s exit should now “ideally” be completed quickly.
Strong interest is still said to be present from Saudi Arabia but it has not seen a bid materialise after months of links to Al-Ettifaq and Steven Gerrard.
The Daily Record reported on 20 July that although Trabzonspor’s opening offer had been rejected an improved bid was on the way, with Tavernier believed to have already agreed personal terms [Takvim, 19 July].
Rangers captain looks set for Trabzonspor
Philippe Clement is ready to let anyone aside from Jack Butland go for the right price [Rangers Review, 14 July] as he looks to overhaul an Ibrox squad that has underperformed for multiple seasons.
Tavernier’s influence can’t be disputed but there has been a growing sense that now was the right time for both sides to move on.
While Trabzonspor have jumped to the front of the queue to add the right-back to left-back Borna Barisic and midfielder John Lundstram it remains possible that rivals could extend the race through next week.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Besiktas are reportedly lining up their own bid [Takvim, 20 July] and interest has also been reported from England [Scottish Sun, 19 July].
As T4O acknowledges the Turkish developments could still spark the Saudi interest to develop into actual offers but as things stand the defender certainly seems closest to Trabzonspor.
There had been claims earlier in the summer that he has also agreed personal terms with Al-Ettifaq [Gallant Few Podcast, 19 June] so should Gerrard convince his bosses to put the right money on the table it could be relatively straight forward for a deal to be done there.
One way or another it appears the Ibrox captain’s record-breaking era in Glasgow is nearing its end after 125 goals.
In other Rangers news, a hijack bid is set to arrive at Ibrox as another club look to sign an exit-bound Gers ace.
