'Red Bull Can't Save Them' - Keith Wyness: Leeds at risk of points deduction

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed new investors Red Bull “can’t save” Leeds United from a potential breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Whites will still have to sell first-team players this summer despite the exciting announcement.

Leeds confirmed last week (30 May) that Red Bull have taken a minority ownership stake in the club which will provide additional capital investment.

The Yorkshire giants announced a loss of £33.7million in their latest 2022-23 accounts following a further loss of £34million in 2021-22.

Under PSR, Leeds will be allowed to lose a maximum of £61million over a three-year period ending in the 2024-25 campaign.

Leeds must sell first-team stars despite Red Bull investment, says Wyness

Potential punishments for breaching that figure include fines and points deductions, with Everton and Nottingham Forest docked points for breaking the rules this term.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Until we know the full details, it’s hard to know if a lot of cash has changed hands with this Red Bull deal.

“It seems to be equity, shirt sponsorship and possibly some other form of sponsorship.

“I don’t know how much cash will filter through to the bottom line.

“Leeds have got some big numbers owed to other clubs for players, so they’re sailing pretty close to the wind.

“They’ll have to make some player sales to cover this PSR issue, as we’ve discussed before.

“I don’t think this Red Bull deal can save them. It’s a bigger structural issue.”
